Applus+ to lead a road safety improvement project for Infraestruturas de Portugal

The project aims to develop technical solutions that will enable a comprehensive enhancement of road safety across five sections of national roads located in these strategic regions of the country, with a total length of approximately 44 kilometers.

The main measures include the geometric redesign of intersections, the adaptation of urban characteristics within localities through the implementation of corrective traffic and safety measures, alignment corrections, and traffic-calming actions to adjust the infrastructure to real usage conditions. Central barriers will also be installed to improve safety on bidirectional sections, and existing infrastructure will be reviewed and upgraded, including drainage systems, pavements, signage, lighting, and road telematics systems.

The project is divided into two main phases:

• The first phase will involve the characterization of the current situation and the development of intervention proposals, including the collection and analysis of topographic, environmental, traffic, and safety data.
• The second phase will consist of the execution project, developing the detailed technical designs necessary for the implementation of the proposed solutions.

To execute the project, Ripórtico Applus+ will employ advanced design and surveying technologies, including 2D and 3D design applications for alignments and structural elements, topographic mapping obtained through drone flights, geomatic LiDAR surveying to generate high-precision digital terrain models, and the QGIS geotechnical instrumentation system used for georeferencing and spatial analysis of field surveys.

A multidisciplinary team of Ripórtico Applus+ specialists, with extensive experience in the sector, will be responsible for developing the necessary interventions to strengthen the safety of the existing infrastructure, actively contributing to risk reduction, accident prevention, and the protection of all road users against potential road failures.
