On October 8, 2025, in Washington, D.C., the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) honoured José José Villalaz, one of Applus+ employees, with the 2025 Superheroes of Development Award, in recognition of his outstanding work on rural electrification projects that, for over 18 years, have transformed the lives of communities throughout Panama.
The award celebrates a sustained commitment to expanding access to electricity in rural and Indigenous areas of Panama. This effort, driven by Applus+ in partnership with institutions from the Panamanian electrical sector and the IDB, has helped improve the quality of life for thousands of families, promoting equity, inclusion, and sustainable development.
Since 2007, Applus+ has supported the country in the design, evaluation, and supervision of rural electrification projects financed by the IDB. Through sectoral diagnostics, inspection of electrical installations, technical and economic studies, and supervision of electrical works, the company has helped deliver safe and reliable energy to remote regions—always prioritizing sociocultural respect and community participation.
The impact of these projects is tangible: homes illuminated, schools and health centres operating reliably, local enterprises growing, and communities now enjoying safety, connectivity, and economic opportunities. Within these initiatives, Applus+ has also encouraged women’s participation in local committees and technical training processes, fostering gender equity and social sustainability.
“This recognition reflects the collective effort of many years. In every project, we strive not only to meet the highest technical standards but also to create a lasting human impact. Bringing energy means bringing development, opportunity, and hope,” said José José Villalaz, after receiving the award on behalf of the Applus+ team.
Applus+ approach combines engineering, sustainability, and social management, integrating technical and community dimensions into every project. The results achieved strengthen the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in providing affordable, equitable, and clean energy access.
With over 100,000 households benefited and rural electrification coverage exceeding 95% of the national territory, Applus+ work has been essential in meeting the country’s commitments to multilateral organizations and in consolidating an inclusive and sustainable electrification model.
We congratulate José José Villalaz and the entire Applus+ team in Panama, whose professionalism, commitment, and social awareness have made it possible for energy to reach even the most remote communities. This award reaffirms the company’s purpose: to drive innovation, efficiency, and sustainable development in Latin America—always placing people at the centre.
