Applus+ recognized by the IDB through the “Superheroes of Development” award for its contribution to energy access in rural communities of Panama

The award celebrates a sustained commitment to expanding access to electricity in rural and Indigenous areas of Panama. This effort, driven by Applus+ in partnership with institutions from the Panamanian electrical sector and the IDB, has helped improve the quality of life for thousands of families, promoting equity, inclusion, and sustainable development.

Energy that transforms communities

Since 2007, Applus+ has supported the country in the design, evaluation, and supervision of rural electrification projects financed by the IDB. Through sectoral diagnostics, inspection of electrical installations, technical and economic studies, and supervision of electrical works, the company has helped deliver safe and reliable energy to remote regions—always prioritizing sociocultural respect and community participation.

The impact of these projects is tangible: homes illuminated, schools and health centres operating reliably, local enterprises growing, and communities now enjoying safety, connectivity, and economic opportunities. Within these initiatives, Applus+ has also encouraged women’s participation in local committees and technical training processes, fostering gender equity and social sustainability.

With over 100,000 households benefited and rural electrification coverage exceeding 95% of the national territory, Applus+ work has been essential in meeting the country’s commitments to multilateral organizations and in consolidating an inclusive and sustainable electrification model.
