Applus+ in Portugal is carrying out the geotechnical instrumentation and structural health monitoring works during the construction of the new Ruby Line (Casa da Música - Santo Ovídio) of the Porto Metro, one of the most important railway infrastructures currently underway in the country, part of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP) and with a total investment of €435 million.
The Ruby Line will be 6.3 kilometres long, of which 2.5 km will run through tunnels and 3.8 km will be above ground. The route includes five underground stations, three above-ground stations, three ventilation and emergency shafts, and two additional evacuation shafts. A highlight of the project is the construction of the “D. Antónia Ferreira, a Ferreirinha” bridge, an 838-metre reinforced concrete arch bridge that will cross the River Douro and is set to become one of the largest of its kind in the world.
Applus+ is responsible for the complete monitoring of the project, using advanced instrumentation systems and automated readings that are integrated into the SIGTUN platform, developed in-house. The equipment deployed includes more than 27 Robotic Total Stations, more than 2,000 mini-prisms, 551 metres of inclinometers, 800 metres of piezometers, 142 metres of vibrating wire piezometers, 300 extensometers and 129 load cells.
By participating in this type of strategic project for the country’s development, Applus+ consolidates its presence in Portugal and continues to strengthen its technical capabilities in the field of instrumentation and monitoring of large infrastructure projects.
