Applus+ implements continuous environmental monitoring system at three international airports in Colombia

17/09/2025

Applus+ is carrying out a pioneering environmental monitoring project at three international airports in Colombia, located in the cities of Armenia, Leticia, and San Andrés. This system, based on continuous, real-time measurement technology, allows for precise assessment of noise levels and air quality in the airport environment, thereby strengthening environmental management and control of the environmental impact generated by air operations.

The initiative includes the implementation of fixed continuous environmental noise monitoring stations with our AmbiensQ tool at each of the airports, equipped with specialized sensors that transmit data on sound pressure and meteorological variables. In addition, semi-annual campaigns are conducted to monitor key air pollutants such as sulfur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), ozone (O₃), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and total hydrocarbons. The results can be viewed in real time from any location through a digital platform. As a complement, the initiative incorporates the characterization of solid waste, thus contributing to a comprehensive approach to environmental management in the airport setting.

Applus+ already provides this service at El Dorado Airport in Bogotá, extending its operations to these three new airports. This project represents an important step toward more sustainable aviation aligned with the well-being of the surrounding communities. Thanks to this monitoring network, it is possible to identify anomalies, track the history of acoustic events, analyse operational patterns, and update noise abatement manuals with real data, thereby strengthening decision-making both on the ground and in the air.

The operation of this system has also involved significant logistical and technical challenges, such as the specialized transport of equipment, its protection against extreme weather conditions, and the integration of solar power solutions and satellite antenna connectivity in remote areas such as Leticia and San Andrés. Applus+ has implemented robust physical security measures, strategic location selection, and technical protocols to ensure continuous operation of the network 24 hours a day.

Key benefits include the continuous generation of reliable information, early detection of environmental risks, optimization of airport routes and procedures to reduce impacts, and strengthened communication with communities through the sharing of results.

This project positions Applus+ as a strategic player in the development of innovative environmental solutions applied to the aerospace sector, aligning technology, sustainability, and institutional commitment for more transparent, efficient, and responsible environmental management at Colombia’s airports.
