Applus+ participates in large H2 projects in Europe

27/01/2022

Applus+ has over 10 years experience supporting hydrogen projects at all stages of the value chain, from its production at the plant onto its final consumption. Our extensive testing and inspection portfolio includes engineering services, risk consultancy, environment management, and supervision and inspection.

In 2021, we participated in a range of green hydrogen projects for different sector leaders in Power, and Oil and gas utilities. These projects are spearheading the uptake of green hydrogen as a source of sustainable energy in Europe.

Our broad service expertise has been integral to our client’s energy-transition projects in 2021:

    • GREEN HYDROGEN PRODUCTION PLANT AND HYDROGEN FUEL STATION IN BARCELONA

Applus+ has provided geotechnical studies, environmental risk assessments and engineering services for the first hydrogen plant for public use in Spain. This green hydrogen plant, generated by electrolysis, is being constructed at a 5,000 m2 logistics and industrial area in Barcelona.

The green hydrogen produced will fuel the city’s metropolitan buses, as well as potentially for use in other fleets and industries which adopt hydrogen as an energy solution.

Technicians from Applus+ are detailed to evaluate the technical specifications that define requirements, standards and best practices for the project. The scope of their work covers engineering services for the H2 auxiliary systems, including civil, structural, electrical, and instrumentation and control engineering.

    • GREEN-HYDROGEN PRODUCTION PLANT IN PUERTOLLANO

Applus+ has delivered engineering services on currently the largest green-hydrogen plant for industrial use in Europe. The Puertollano plant in Spain will consist of a 100 MW photovoltaic solar plant, a lithium-ion battery system and a 20 MW electrolytic-hydrogen production system.

On this project, Applus+ has calculated the operating parameters and design of the systems for de-mineralised water and water; the closed-cooling circuit; compressed air; and drainage.

    • ANTWERP’S GREEN-HYDROGEN PRODUCTION PLANT

An Applus+ team has provided third-party inspection services of the pressure equipment at a green hydrogen plant in Antwerp, Belgium.

Third-party inspection services provide clients with the confidence that purchased equipment will arrive at the correct specification and minimise the financial impact of faulty equipment. Applus+ calls on our extensive international network of technical personnel for their knowledge and expertise on a wide variety of standards and specifications.

    • NEW CONSTRUCTION OF HYDROGEN PIPELINE AND TIE-INS HYDROGEN PROJECT

The technical team at Applus+ has delivered advanced NDT services on the new construction of two hydrogen pipeline projects in the Netherlands.

Applus+ is a leading provider of NDT and pipeline inspection services. Our NDT technicians bring vast experience to choose the most appropriate method for NDT inspection of the pipeline asset’s construction, type, and environment. During construction, in particular, non-destructive weld testing is integral to assuring stringent industry quality and safety standards.

We develop advanced NDT applications and technologies in-house, harnessing these innovations and traditional methods for a variety of key applications, clients, and market sectors.

    • PIPELINE FOR NEW GREEN-HYDROGEN CONSTRUCTION

The construction of a new green-hydrogen generation plant in Spain has an Applus+ team delivering technical services for geotechnical study, environmental soil characterisation of subsoils, and pre-load monitoring.

The geophysical-engineering services from Applus+ play a fundamental role in making a geo-hazard assessment at the early stages of a project to maintain both safety and cost control over the project's life cycle.

The environmental characterisation of the subsoil is an essential process to gain critical insights into its environmental status and condition before the development of any groundwork.
