Applus+ approved by NXP as security evaluation laboratory for MIFARE products

01/02/2016

MIFARE is a NXP-owned technology for chips, widely implemented in non-payment contactless smart cards and proximity cards.

Applus+ Laboratories has been approved to conduct security evaluations on MIFARE-compliant products, and can participate in MIFARE Certifications either as an evaluation lab or a certification lab.

The MIFARE security evaluation scheme requires the participation of two approved laboratories: the evaluation lab performs vulnerability analysis, defines the test plan and performs security evaluation, while the certification lab approves the test plan prior to testing, verifies the report from the evaluation lab and issues the approval letter and summary evaluation report.

    MIFARE technology

MIFARE, a proprietary technology owned by NXP, is based on the ISO/IEC 14443 standard and similar to EMVCo but for non-payment uses. MIFARE is used in a wide range of smart card applications like transport, loyalty, ticketing, etc.

As today’s secure chips are the basic hardware used for many different applications, chip manufacturers must certify their products under the most widely accepted schemes such as EMVCo and MIFARE. Applus+ Laboratories is also accredited by EMVCo for IC and platform security evaluations, helping customers to speed up their time to market by conducting both security evaluations in the same laboratory.

    MIFARE via Common Criteria Evaluation

As many chip manufacturers evaluate their products using Common Criteria (CC), NXP also awards Mifare Certification to those products that successfully pass a CC evaluation to EAL4+ level. Applus+ is also recognized to perform CC evaluations.
