Applus+ has been awarded contracts to supervise the adaptation of two thermal power plants in the Canary Islands

Unión Eléctrica de Canarias Generación, S.A.U (UNELCO) has awarded two contracts to Applus+ to carry out project management, environmental management, health and safety coordination and supervision of works for the adaptation of the Barranco de Tirajana and Granadilla thermal power plants in the Canary Islands.

Before the award of these two contracts, Endesa had already relied on Applus+ to prepare the environmental documentation they needed for official permission to carry out the works in the thermal power plants.

Applus+ is providing Endesa with all of the necessary services connected with the works of construction, installation and commissioning in the power plants. The main objective is to adapt these to comply with the pollutant emission limits specified by the European Directive 2010/75 for Industrial Emissions which came into force on the 1st of January 2020, and the subsequent BREF reference document which will need to be followed from August 2021.

In order to achieve these objectives, a system for optimising combustion for low levels of NOx production has been installed, along with a provisional system for selective non-catalytic reduction, which enables compliance with the Directive which came into force on the 1st of January 2020. Later, Selective Catalytic Reactors (SCR) will be installed at both plants, located in the flue gas circuit. These will allow the gases to be returned to the existing circuit once they have been treated in the reactor, significantly reducing the quantity of emissions into the atmosphere in compliance with the limits coming into force in August 2021.

These projects are being undertaken by a multidisciplinary Applus+ technical team as they will be supervising all of the specialist areas: electrical, mechanical, civil, health and safety coordination, and monitoring and oversight of the works. The objective is to provide a comprehensive service for the monitoring and oversight of the works in accordance with implementation plans, specifications and standards.

Each plant is dealt with independently as their location, implementation programmes, commissioning, procedures and other conditions necessitate this.

The Applus+ Energy & Industry Division has proven in-depth knowledge of the sector, giving large companies such as Endesa confidence in us, and allowing us to consolidate our position as one of the leading companies in testing, inspection and certification.
