Applus+ is delivering a specialized environmental monitoring and reforestation follow-up service for a wind project located in the municipality of General Bravo, Nuevo León, Mexico, with the objective of ensuring compliance with environmental requirements during the operational phase.
The project integrates technical programs focused on monitoring flying wildlife, including birdlife, chiropterans (bats), and the monarch butterfly, as well as follow-up activities for the native-species reforestation program, enabling the assessment and mitigation of impacts associated with the operation of renewable energy generation infrastructure.
The scope of the service includes the implementation of specific methodologies adapted to the wind industry, including systematic monitoring throughout an annual cycle for the characterization of biological communities, analysis of behavioral patterns, and generation of technical information aimed at defining mitigation measures.
In parallel, the reforestation program includes the evaluation of the current condition of established vegetation, analysis of survival rates, and the definition of maintenance and replacement strategies for individual plants, based on environmental and seasonal variables specific to the region.
Project execution is supported by a multidisciplinary team composed of wildlife monitoring and environmental management specialists, as well as the use of technical tools such as remote acoustic monitoring equipment for birds and bats, ensuring continuity in data collection even under adverse weather conditions.
From the perspective of renewable energy project managers, one of the main risks during the operational phase is non-compliance with environmental requirements related to wildlife and ecological compensation, which may result in regulatory sanctions, operational restrictions, or reputational impacts.
Additionally, factors such as prolonged droughts, extreme temperatures, or irregular rainfall may affect the effectiveness of reforestation and monitoring programs, compromising expected results if appropriate technical strategies are not in place.
Applus+ mitigates these risks through a structured approach that combines specialized environmental monitoring, the use of technology for data capture, adaptive management, and continuous monitoring of ecological indicators, enabling the generation of reliable information for decision-making and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
As a result, the project contributes to strengthening the environmental management of the wind asset, improving information traceability, optimizing mitigation strategies, managing biodiversity, and ensuring the long-term operational sustainability of the project.
