Applus+ performs monopile inspections for offshore wind farm

26/05/2025

Applus+ is in charge of the inspection of more than 50 monopiles for an ambitious offshore wind farm in the US. The monopiles will be manufactured in the Netherlands. This project is one more step in a fruitful collaboration with a renewable energy client with whom Applus+ has maintained an excellent relationship for many years.

For this project, a team of six inspectors will work in three shifts, ensuring that we are present 24 hours a day. This allows us to guarantee high-quality inspection and quality control throughout the entire production process.

We conduct visual inspections that are essential for:

    • Detection of surface defects: Visual inspection helps identify visible defects such as cracks, corrosion, alignment issues, and physical damage. These defects can impact the structural integrity of the monopiles.

    • Quick and direct results: It provides immediate results and is relatively simple to perform. This allows for a quick verification of whether welding and construction meet the specifications and standards.

    • Cost-effective: Visual inspection is one of the most cost-effective methods for non-destructive testing (NDT). It requires minimal equipment and can often be carried out without extensive preparation.

    • Preventive maintenance: Regular visual inspections help detect potential issues early, assisting in planning preventive maintenance and avoiding larger, more costly repairs in the future.

    • Support for other NDT methods: Visual inspection can serve as an initial step to determine if further, more detailed inspections are necessary. For example, it can indicate where ultrasonic or radiographic testing should be applied.
