03/06/2025

On 22nd May, the official opening of the expansion of the Sa Pobla wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Mallorca took place. This strategic project was promoted by the Balearic Water and Environmental Quality Agency (ABAQUA) and led by the Regional Ministry of the Sea and Water Cycle of the Government of the Balearic Islands. Applus+ participated in this project through site management, health and safety Coordination and site supervision.

This project has been carried out over two years without interrupting the treatment service at any time, and the works have made it possible to double the process lines, modernise the treatment systems and significantly reduce the plant’s energy consumption.

Thanks to this intervention, the WWTP’s treatment capacity has increased by 54%, from an average design flow of 2,500 to 3,850 m³/day, allowing it to serve a population equivalent of up to 25,667 inhabitants.

The opening ceremony was attended by the Chairwoman of the Balearic Islands Government, Marga Prohens; the Regional Minister of the Sea and Water Cycle, Juan Manuel Lafuente; the Managing Director of Water Resources, Joan Calafat; the Manager of ABAQUA, Emeterio Moles, and the Mayor of Sa Pobla, Biel Ferragut. Representing Applus+ at the ceremony were Ceferino Laserna, Delegate for the Valencian Community, Murcia and the Balearic Islands, and Antonio Javier Espinosa, Head of the Construction Department in the same area.

This project reaffirms the commitment of Applus+ to sustainability, the continuous improvement of water infrastructure and energy efficiency throughout the entire water cycle.
