Applus+ leads the technical assistance in the reconstruction project of the C3 line in Valencia, Spain

25/11/2025

Applus+ has played a key role in the recovery of the C3 commuter rail line in Valencia following the 2024 DANA storm. Applus+, in charge of the railway construction supervision and technical assistance project, has provided engineering solutions that have made it possible to bring various sections of the railway line back into service in the shortest possible time. This has been achieved thanks to the high level of specialization and commitment of our technicians, the use of advanced technological tools, and the multidisciplinary capabilities offered by a company like ours.

On 29 October 2024, a DANA struck Spain’s Valencia region, unleashing unprecedented torrential rainfall that caused rivers and ravines to overflow, resulting in numerous casualties and extensive damage to homes and infrastructure across the area.

Two days after the event, drone inspection work began to identify and assess the damage along 85 km of track. During the execution of the work, we opted for a dedicated mobility solution to automate report generation, and technologies were deployed that accelerated construction decisions and ensured the correct execution of the work while meeting the established milestones. As a result, on 12 December 2024, train traffic was able to resume on the Valencia–Aldaia section.

On 17 November 2025, the C3 line was brought back into service from Aldaia to the Ricardo Tormo Circuit, and repairs up to Buñol are expected to be completed before the end of 2025. Work will continue under the track renovation contract that had been awarded to Applus+ and planned by ADIF prior to the DANA.

Our multidisciplinary team has been involved from the very beginning, enabling the infrastructure to become fully operational in record time while ensuring the safety and reliability of the rail service.

But beyond the professional scope, this project is a source of pride for our company. The Applus+ Norcontrol team in Valencia demonstrated exceptional commitment from the start, carrying out numerous engineering tasks on a personal basis to support the recovery efforts of the affected municipalities. Their voluntary involvement and technical expertise reinforce one message: the importance of civil engineering for society—not only for the construction and operation of infrastructure, but also in situations such as the one we have experienced. This exemplary effort shows how knowledge and professional dedication can make a difference in critical moments.

The coordinated work between ADIF, Applus+, and the rest of the companies involved has made it possible to complete the recovery of the C3 line in an exceptional timeframe, ensuring a resilient and safe infrastructure that is essential for mobility and the development of the area.
