Applus+ inspects a complex gas pipeline new construction project in hard-to-reach locations in BC, Canada

25/05/2023

Applus+ in Canada carried out a series of examinations, including the inspection of a pipeline girth weld using Automated Ultrasonic Testing (AUT) in the Coastal Mountain Range on a first-of-its-kind natural gas pipeline.

Performing an inspection assignment can provide a number of difficulties, particularly if the assets that need to be examined are situated in difficult-to-access locations. Our team of technical professionals worked with cable cranes and no vehicle access to complete AUT inspections deploying its Rotoscan™ system on high slopes (35°-58°).

The use of a cable crane and gondola system was implemented for pipeline welding and construction during the 2022-2023 project. Our team utilized track carriers with onboard laboratories to enable inspection access. The utilization of the track carriers has allowed our technical experts to execute the scope efficiently while also prioritizing crew safety.

Also, using a cable crane, the team developed a self-levelling inspection station that is currently being moved from section to section. The use of the self-levelling station has been paramount in the application of cable crane AUT activities on these extreme slopes. With the innovation of the inspection station and tracked carrier systems, inspections are not only possible but are now being completed safely with minimal environmental impact.

This particular task serves as a showcase for the calibre and commitment that our professionals are able to provide at every stage. Notwithstanding the scope's access issues, Applus+ continues to perform, in various locations within the province of British Columbia, to the highest requirements without having to change its inspection techniques.
