Applus+ is carrying out a specialized quality assurance and structural integrity project for wind turbine towers, supporting the manufacturing process at one of the main industrial hubs in northeastern Brazil. The project, which began in November 2025, will run throughout the entire production program scheduled for 2026, ensuring the reliability of critical components for wind energy generation.
The scope of work focuses on the comprehensive application of non-destructive testing (NDT) as a key tool for preventing structural failures, controlling industrial quality, and verifying compliance with technical specifications and regulatory requirements within the wind energy sector. To this end, Applus+ has mobilized a highly qualified technical team and certified inspection technology, ensuring consistent, traceable results aligned with international standards.
During execution, multiple non-destructive testing methods are applied in a coordinated manner, including ultrasonic testing (UT) for the detection of internal discontinuities in critical welds; visual testing (VT) for geometric and surface verification of welds; liquid penetrant testing (LPT) to identify surface-breaking defects; and magnetic particle testing (MT) to detect surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials. This integrated approach enables the assessment of the integrity of each component from the early stages of manufacturing through to final release.
The service scope includes the mobilization and calibration of equipment, the systematic execution of inspections along the production line, and the issuance of technical conformity reports with traceability by batch and by component. This technical information provides full visibility of the production process, facilitating decision-making, process optimization, and the reduction of rework.
The manufacturing of wind turbine towers requires rigorous controls due to the mechanical, environmental, and operational demands these structures will face over decades of service.
