The Spanish Accreditation Body (ENAC, Entidad Nacional de Acreditación) has accredited the Applus+ Control Body to carry out inspections of facilities with Category A hazardous mining waste, making them the first entity in Spain to be authorised to perform these inspections.
This accreditation has made Applus+ a control body for the inspection of facilities with Category A hazardous mining waste, in accordance with Royal Decree 975/2009, which was amended by Royal Decree 777/2012. A waste facility is classified as Category A if, pursuant to a previous risk assessment and the facility’s location and environmental impact, a serious accident could occur due to an error or malfunction, such as a dump collapse or dam failure. Mines are also classified as Category A if they contain hazardous waste above a certain limit or if the substances or solutions are classified as dangerous above a certain limit.
ENAC is the only government accreditation body in Spain. It provides security to both the market and society through evaluating technical competence and impartiality before an independent third party through a system that complies with international regulations. This accreditation is testament to the company’s ability to gain the required trust from all agents involved in the sector. Moreover, this accreditation demonstrates that Applus+ is a competent, independent and reliable company, all of which are required to be able to offer this certification service at the level required by the market.
Appropriate waste management from mining operations is vital to protect the environment and minimise impact on biodiversity and human health. For this reason, the authorities ask mining companies with Category A waste facilities to adopt a strict risk prevention policy for mining waste.
At Applus+, our technicians have many years of experience and an extensive knowledge of current regulations. This allows us to provide the best services, guaranteeing compliance with legislation and ensuring safety in the function of these types of facilities throughout Spain.
