Independent technical consulting for the acquisition of the San Miguel wind project in Costa Rica

The project, currently in the initial development phase and with its environmental license already obtained, will feature 9 wind turbines of 4.8 MW each, with a design that includes 133 m diameter rotors and hubs at 83 m height.

This wind farm represents a strong step towards strengthening Costa Rica’s renewable energy mix. Once operational, expected in early 2028, it will generate enough clean energy to supply over 40,000 homes and avoid approximately 60,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually.

At Barlovento Applus+, the specialized consulting team has provided comprehensive technical support to Naiad Renovables through a thorough due diligence process covering multiple key aspects of the project.

Firstly, a detailed review of the wind farm design was conducted, assessing turbine configuration, layout, site conditions, and compatibility with the local wind resource.

The feasibility of grid connection was also analyzed, including evacuation capacity, existing electrical infrastructure, and the technical and regulatory requirements for integrating the wind farm into the national grid. The team also performed a road survey, evaluating transport routes for critical components such as blades, towers, and nacelles, identifying potential logistical constraints and proposing mitigation solutions.

Finally, an economic analysis of the engineering design was carried out, reviewing estimated construction, operation, and maintenance costs, as well as the technical assumptions underpinning the project’s financial model.

This work has been essential to identifying and mitigating technical, logistical, and economic risks, ensuring the project’s viability and reinforcing the client’s confidence in their investment.
