Applus+ in Singapore completes onboard overhaul of drilling platform

Every five years, drilling rigs are required to carry out specific mandatory surveys. Ensuring that the rig is fit for purpose involves a full strip-down of the main drilling equipment to allow for its inspection and overhaul. The work is often carried out in a workshop by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM).

Applus+ in Singapore recently completed a full API RP 8B Category IV inspection and overhaul of travelling block, crown block, deadline and fast line sheave assembly for a Malaysian drilling contractor. As the task was performed onboard, it was completed in a significantly shorter timeframe. In addition to carrying out the inspection and overhaul, in accordance with all relevant standards, Applus+ used skilled rope access technicians, who carried out the initial removal and re-installation while working at height.

The project saw work carried out onboard a drilling rig, with technicians required to work in restricted space and think on their feet.

Several contractors and multiple simultaneous work fronts meant that the Applus+ team’s scope of work was the critical path if the client was to resume drilling operations on time. Applus+ met its contract obligations, providing the manpower, tools and materials required, despite the tight timeframe and limited stock from suppliers.

Notwithstanding these difficulties, the company was able to do the work in approximately half the time it would have taken the OEM, as well as coming in safely, under budget and four days ahead of schedule, thanks to effective planning and operation. The contractor was very satisfied, with Applus+ subsequently awarded two similar projects within the next six months.
