One of the most important industrial and petrochemical areas in the Colombian Caribbean needed to strengthen its environmental monitoring capabilities in response to the growing environmental impact of its more than 200 industrial activities. Applus+ designed, implemented, and operated an integrated and intelligent real-time air and water quality monitoring system, enabling the environmental authority to access, for the first time, continuous, reliable, and actionable information for environmental protection.
Industrial, port, and tourism activities carried out in the area generated atmospheric emissions and discharges that, without adequate control, affected environmental quality, public health, and surrounding ecosystems. Historically, environmental monitoring was conducted through manual processes, resulting in fragmented data and delayed reporting that limited the ability to identify pollution sources and make timely decisions. This reactive approach increased regulatory, reputational, and environmental risks for the authorities responsible for environmental oversight.
Applus+ designed and implemented an intelligent environmental monitoring network consisting of six automatic and manual stations for atmospheric pollutants (particulate matter and gases), six automatic stations for physicochemical water-quality parameters (temperature, pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, salinity, and turbidity), and nine smart poles for atmospheric, meteorological, and noise-level monitoring. All data were integrated into the ambiensQ suite digital platform, enabling real-time visualization, performance indicator generation, early-warning alerts, and historical analysis. This architecture transformed the monitoring model from a manual and fragmented approach into an automated, traceable, and evidence-based system.
The implementation of the system provided, for the first time, continuous and reliable environmental information, facilitating the identification of pollution patterns, the early detection of critical events, and the analysis of long-term trends. The transition to automated monitoring significantly reduced response times and strengthened the preventive capabilities of the environmental authority. The solution established a data-driven management model, raising environmental control standards in one of the country's most environmentally sensitive industrial areas and demonstrating Applus+ ability to design and deploy high-impact intelligent monitoring networks.
