RTD IWEX Receives General DNV GL Qualification for CRA Pipeline Girth Weld Applications

03/08/2018
After the successful qualification of the RTD IWEX system for the automated ultrasonic inspection of carbon steel pipeline girth welds, we are proud to announce that the RTD IWEX system has also been qualified for the inspection of welds with a corrosive resistant alloy (CRA) layer (metallurgical bonded and welded overlay type CRA), following the requirements of DNVGL-ST-F101:2017 and DNVGL-RP-F118.
The RTD IWEX system is the first qualified system based on Full Matrix Capture (FMC) ultrasonic imaging.

The system is unique for its capability of capturing multiple ultrasonic modes related to different travel paths (direct, skip, tandem and cross) and wave types (shear and longitudinal) in a single run.

Where for carbon steel only shear waves are used, for the inspection of welds with a CRA layer, also longitudinal waves are used to reconstruct the image. The use of longitudinal waves and waves that have been mode converted from shear to longitudinal and vice versa, allow for optimal weld penetration and coverage resulting in optimized signal to noise ratio for high probability of detection and image focusing for accurate sizing.

The results can be visualized in comprehensive 2D and 3D interactive presentations whereby the different modes can be selected and viewed.

Easy to use software tools are available for sizing (based on tip diffraction and drop-off level) to ensure accurate and reproducible interpretation.
