Applus+ has been awarded the technical assistance contract for the modernization of two railway sections of the Linha do Oeste in Portugal

    Applus+ in Portugal has been appointed by Infraestruturas de Portugal, a leader in the national railway sector, to provide Consulting, Supervision and Coordination of Health and Safety for the works of modernization of the Linha do Oeste, in the Lisbon area.

    The modernization of the west line will be carried out in two phases: phase 1 corresponds to the electrification and modernisation of the 43 km long section between Mira Sintra-Meleças and Torres Vedras and the second phase will be carried out on the 44 km long section between Torres Vedras and Caldas da Rainha. Applus+ will provide technical assistance in both phases.

    This project is part of the Ferrovia 2020 Program, which aims to improve the capacity and competitiveness of the Portuguese’s National Railway Network by increasing the capacity, safety and reliability of its operation and reducing travel times.

    The modernization of the railway line includes the development of the preliminary study, the elaboration of the project, the execution of two works of electrification, civil construction and geotechnical works, as well as the construction of overpasses and underpasses and protection and stabilization structures for the platform. Further work will be done on the modernization and adaptation of passenger piers, the design and execution of a traction substation and autotransformer stations, and the execution of six signalling and telecommunications contracts.

    November 2020 marks the start of this project, which will last approximately 33 months, requiring the participation of a hundred Applus+ technicians.
