Applus+ contributes to corrective maintenance on Panama's highways

25/10/2021

With its instrumentation and monitoring technology, using high-performance auscultation equipment, Applus+ in Panama conducted specialized work to determine the functional and structural parameters of the road pavement.

Through this pioneering project on a national scale, road maintenance and management plans have been developed using reliable georeferenced measurements, data and images, reducing costs through interventions and repairs along two of the capital's main highways.

With the help of  Applus+ pavement management services, road and highway owners and operators save major resources, as adequate preventive maintenance measures costs three to five times less than corrective maintenance work. When this type of maintenance is not conducted and the pavement reaches critical condition, it must undergo expensive reconstruction.

Applus+ provided the following services: auscultation of flexures using the impact deflectometer (FWD) and a study of the bearing capacity of the pavement, a geophysical study by means of geo-radar to finish the thickness of the pavement structure, a surface regularity campaign using a laser profilometer, the calculation of the International Regularity Index (IRI), a visual inspection campaign of the pavement and the obtaining of the Pavement Condition Index (PCI).

Applus+ continues to be a trusted partner in the execution of large road infrastructure projects in Latin America, and will continue to help companies mitigate and safeguard resources.
