November 16 2022 - Applus+ joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in February 2022 to combat global warming and climate change. SBTi standards follow rigorous scientific criteria that ensure that the positive impact on the environment is genuine. The standards were defined after extensive, transparent and inclusive research involving academia, scientists and experts from various countries, civil society and the business sector.
After a scientific review, SBTi has now validated Applus+’ near-term greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets, ratifying the alignment to a 1.5°C trajectory limit of global warming above pre-industrial levels. The Group thus joins other Spanish multinational corporations that have been ratified by SBTi in the same category.
The official certification statement is as follows: “Applus+ commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 46.2% by 2030 from a 2019 base year. Applus+ also commits to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, fuel and energy related activities and employee commuting 27.5% by 2030 from a 2019 base year”.
By committing to the Business Ambition for 1.5ºC, Applus+ is also part of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) ‘Race to Zero’ campaign, which brings together non-state entities from 120 countries to completely eliminate emissions by 2050, the largest alliance in history in pursuit of this goal.
The Applus+ Group has committed to an ultimate goal of zero emissions by 2050. A net-zero emissions company is one that achieves a state in which the activities within its value-chain result in no net impact on the climate from greenhouse gas emissions and neutralises those residual emissions that it cannot eliminate.
Joan Amigó, Chief Executive Officer of Applus+, says: “These targets are integral to the three major global mega trends changing the economy and identified in the Group’s strategic plan: energy transition, electrification, and connectivity. Through the dedication of our professionals, the trust of our clients and the allocation of our capital, we at Applus+ advance in our commitment to provide more sustainable services and ESG development.”
The company sets ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) targets every year and monitors their fulfilment. These actions have attracted external recognition from: S&P Global (54, 81% percentile), Sustainalytics (15.6, “Low risk”), MSCI ESG Ratings (AA), from the CDP (B), from Gaïa (71/100) and the inclusion of Applus+ within the FTSE4Good Index Series of Ibex.
