Applus+ in Indonesia successfully performed Ex Equipment Inspection

26/05/2021

Our team at Applus+ in Indonesia performed Ex Equipment Inspection for an oil operator at the East Kalimantan offshore platform. The project started in February 2021 and was completed in March 2021 with zero injury or incident. We deployed two Ex Certified personnel for the project.

The technicians certified for the task performed the inspection in accordance with IEC 60079-17 standards, referring to the Inspection and Maintenance of Electrical Installations in Hazardous Areas. The inspection and maintenance standard IEC 60079-17 (which has recently been updated and revised significantly) provides the details for the inspection and maintenance of electrical Ex equipment.

The objective of the Ex Inspection is to ensure the safety of the plant, which can also lead to lower running costs. Most of the Ex Equipment was on the offshore platform, and this type of inspection should be done every three years. The recently updated inspection and maintenance standard IEC 60079-17 provides additional details on how these inspections should be carried out and the responsibilities of inspectors.

Installations in hazardous areas possess features specially designed to make them suitable for operations in such environments. It is essential that in those areas, throughout the lifecycle of such installations, the integrity of those special features is maintained. The inspection generated almost 1,000 reports for the client in less than one week.

The challenge posed to mobilise and move  the personnel  was successfully overcome by the client’s Covid-19 protocol, in which they provide the quarantine logistics and the necessary controls before the Applus+ Inspector is sent offshore.

Applus+ in Indonesia has expanded the portfolio of electrical inspection services to increase our market presence in the country and strengthen our position as a global leader.
