Applus+ drives key gas pipeline project with LiDAR technology

19/12/2023

Applus+ plays a crucial role in a strategic project for the Colombian energy industry. The project involves the construction of a 516 km long, 24-inch diameter gas pipeline that will establish a vital connection between the offshore Campo Cafetero, in the Gulf of Morrosquillo, and the facilities of the National Transportation System (SNT) located in Vasconia, Colombia.

This gas pipeline will have the capacity to transport 450 million cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of gas. Additionally, the project includes the installation of three compression stations, with the first station (ECG) being 1600 BHP and the two subsequent ones being 1200 BHP each. This project stands as a milestone in the country's energy sector and reflects Applus+ commitment to the development of crucial infrastructure for Colombia.

To efficiently and precisely carry out this project, the client has contracted Applus+ to perform a topographical survey using LiDAR technology and photogrammetry with high-resolution cameras. These sensors will be installed in a manned aircraft specially equipped for this type of work.

The services provided by Applus+ cover several crucial aspects of the project. Starting with the materialization and determination of geodetic vertices under the strict specifications of the Agustín Codazzi Geographic Institute (IGAC), data capture using LiDAR technology employing manned aircraft with a corridor width of 1000 meters for each project route, and data collection covering at least four sections of the route. Subsequently, the processing of this LiDAR data is carried out to generate a Digital Elevation Model and a Digital Terrain Model.

Furthermore, the service includes the creation of digital orthophotomosaics in RGB and NIR formats, cartography covering 2D/3D vectorization, identifying topographic elements such as roads, paths, fences, bodies of water, rivers, power lines, and contour lines every 1.0 meter, following the IGAC methodology. Finally, the interpretation of coverages is performed according to the Corine Land Cover Methodology.

The impact of these services on the client is considerable. Thanks to LiDAR technology and Applus+ expertise, the client optimizes engineering development times and obtains complete coverage of the study area with high-precision information. This enables the client to make more informed and precise decisions in their designs and analyses.

Our added value to our client focuses on generating high-precision and resolution digital models, combining LiDAR surveys with other geographic information sources to produce high-quality technical and visual products. This also facilitates the process of 2D and 3D cartographic vectorization.
