The City Council of Vilanova del Camí, a town in the province of Barcelona, Spain, engaged Applus+ energy efficiency team to support the implementation of its plan to upgrade and improve the energy efficiency of the sports lighting at its football field.
The work was carried out in accordance with the guidelines set out in the executive project, which were further enhanced by several improvements proposed by Applus+ as part of its technical submission to the City Council. These included high-performance, lightweight luminaires that delivered better energy efficiency while optimizing final costs, and a wireless lighting management system that allows scene selection to adjust light levels based on the specific use at any given time.
The project's implementation was driven by the City Council’s aim to have a more efficient, modern facility aligned with the UNE EN 12193:2018 standard, which sets out lighting requirements for sports facilities in terms of illumination levels, uniformity, glare, and colour rendering. After completing the installation, Applus+ conducted lighting measurements on the field to ensure compliance with both current regulations and the approved technical design.
The achieved lighting levels, suitable for a Class II installation, now allow for regional-level competitions and high-performance training. This lighting class requires specific conditions to ensure optimal visibility and safety for players, referees, and spectators.
Thanks to this upgrade, the municipality has achieved a 75% reduction in energy consumption from lighting, while also significantly improving the quality and uniformity of the sports facility's lighting.
Applus+ has a team of engineers specialised in energy efficiency, trained to design and implement tailored solutions that optimise energy consumption in our clients' facilities, while meeting the highest technical and environmental standards.
This project exemplifies how energy efficiency and performance improvements can go hand in hand, delivering both economic and functional benefits for municipal infrastructure.
