Applus+ provides fugitive emission detection services for methane transportation in Peru

16/07/2025

The project involved providing detection, quantification, and reporting services of fugitive methane emissions into the atmosphere using portable thermal infrared testing with OGI (Optical Gas Imaging) technology and QOGI (Quantitative Optical Gas Imaging) optical quantification. The objective was to establish maintenance programs to eliminate leaks, reduce methane emissions, and comply with international standards such as OGMP 2.0 and the Global Methane Alliance, thereby supporting the reduction of the carbon footprint of operations and more effective environmental management.

Due to its commitment to voluntary initiatives such as OGMP 2.0 and the Global Methane Alliance, the operator of the pipeline transportation system in Peru needed to identify all methane emissions associated with its operation. Until then, the amount of fugitive emissions was unknown or estimated using generic emission factors with high uncertainty, compromising the accuracy of environmental reports. These created risks of overestimation and weakened efforts to establish effective mitigation and sustainability strategies.

The Applus+ Solution: Fugitive emissions detection with LDAR

Applus+ implemented a solution based on the LDAR (Leak Detection and Repair) methodology, which began with updating the inventory of components at compressor plants and pumping stations. Subsequently, monitoring was performed using portable thermal cameras with OGI technology for visual detection and QOGI technology for optical quantification through specialised software. Each identified leak point was tagged, documented, and reported. Finally, re-monitoring was conducted to verify the proper repair of leaks and the effective reduction of emissions, consolidating a proactive and measurable fugitive emissions management system.
