In this article, written by Allan Oduor, Associate Project Manager at Enertis Applus+, the author examines Georgia’s rapid development of utility-scale energy storage, outlining the state’s strategic blueprint for deploying battery energy storage systems to meet growing electricity demand and strengthen the domestic supply chain.  Applus+ offers a wide range of energy storage services, including BESS engineering, energy storage consulting, and energy storage quality control, supporting the successful planning and execution of such projects.

With plans to deploy over 1GW/4GWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) by 2027, Georgia is emerging as a leading hub for utility-scale energy storage in the Southeastern United States. Driven by rapid economic growth, increasing electricity demand from data centers, electric vehicle manufacturing, and other energy-intensive industries, Georgia Power is executing a strategic plan to expand grid-scale storage across multiple sites. The plan includes 765MW of BESS currently under construction and an additional 500MW approved under the 2023 Integrated Resource Plan, with targeted procurement for further capacity through the early 2030s.

Key factors enabling this growth include strategic site selection near existing substations or retired plants, regulatory support, and a rapidly developing domestic battery manufacturing ecosystem. Georgia hosts several major battery production facilities, leveraging federal and state incentives such as the Inflation Reduction Act to reduce costs and secure supply chains. While policy and tariff uncertainties pose risks, Georgia’s structured approach—combining ready-to-build projects, a clear procurement schedule, and a growing local supply chain—positions the state as a reduced-risk growth opportunity in the U.S. energy storage market.

This article highlights Georgia’s blueprint for grid-scale energy storage, demonstrating how targeted planning, infrastructure optimization, and domestic manufacturing can accelerate the deployment of reliable, revenue-generating storage solutions.
