Applus+ in Indonesia supported Merak Chemical Indonesia (MCCI), a chemical manufacturing company located in Merak, Banten, with a pipeline inspection project using IWEX technology aimed at assessing the condition of critical operational piping systems. As part of the client's ongoing asset integrity management program, the project sought to provide a detailed understanding of piping condition, support maintenance planning, and help ensure the continued safe and reliable operation of key process assets.
MCCI operates in an environment where piping systems are exposed to demanding operating conditions and are essential to maintaining efficient production. Over time, these assets can be affected by degradation mechanisms such as corrosion, wall thinning, cracking, and other structural anomalies. The facility also relies on fabricated and welded piping systems, making the accurate detection and characterization of fabrication- and welding-related defects an important element of long-term asset reliability. The client required an inspection solution capable of identifying potential integrity concerns with a high degree of accuracy while minimizing disruption to ongoing operations.
To meet these requirements, Applus+ deployed Inverse Wavefield Extrapolation (IWEX), an ultrasonic non-destructive testing (NDT) technique used to assess the internal condition of piping systems. The technology reconstructs ultrasonic wave propagation within inspected components to generate highly detailed images of piping condition, supporting the detection, sizing and characterization of defects such as corrosion, wall thinning, cracking, welding-related defects and other structural anomalies.
One of the key challenges was obtaining high-quality inspection results from assets that remained in service while minimizing disruption to operations. By combining IWEX with specialist inspection expertise and advanced imaging capabilities, Applus+ provided MCCI with accurate data on the condition of its piping infrastructure and supported informed asset integrity and maintenance decisions.
The project provided MCCI with detailed insights into the condition of its piping systems, supporting asset integrity management and more informed planning. The results also helped identify potential integrity risks and optimize future inspection and maintenance activities.
This project demonstrates Applus+ in Indonesia's capability to apply advanced NDT and piping inspection technologies such as IWEX to complex industrial assets, helping operators enhance the safety, reliability, and long-term performance of critical infrastructure.
