The European project C-MobILE deploys a set of mobility support services in Barcelona and its metropolitan area

16/10/2020
    • C-MobILE Barcelona is an app that reports in real time and with official data the time of traffic light changes, the approach of emergency vehicles or the presence of vulnerable users, such as cyclists and motorcyclists, as well as incidents on the road, such as construction work, traffic jams and speed limits.
    • The application is free and integrates its visual and voice warnings into any navigation app, such as Google Maps or Waze.
    • Applus+ IDIADA, RACC motoring association and Barcelona City Council's Directorate of Mobility, with the support of the Municipal Institute of Information Technology, are leading the deployment of the C-MobILE project in Barcelona.

The set of services that the European project C-MobILE (Accelerating C-ITS Mobility Innovation and depLoyment in Europe) has deployed consists of offering services to improve mobility in Barcelona and its metropolitan area in order to reduce road incidents and the environmental impact of road transport and to turn Barcelona into an efficient and fully safe city for citizens on the move.

The consortium led by Applus+ IDIADA, the RACC and the Mobility Department of the Barcelona City Council, with the support of the Municipal Institute of Information Technology, has presented the C-Mobile Barcelona application, which provides official, real-time information to drivers, motorcyclists and cyclists on the mobility incidents that occur around them. This deployment in Barcelona has also had the collaboration of Túnels de Barcelona i Cadí, Piaggio, the Catalan Traffic Service and ADASA.

Through the C-MobILE Barcelona app, users can receive visual and voice warnings of different types of incidents and services on the road, such as construction work, traffic jams or adverse weather conditions, the status of reversible lanes and information from traffic panels, as well as notifications of speed limits inside and outside the city, entry to the Low Emission Zone, traffic light change times and the recommended traffic speed for reaching them when they are green. It also warns of the presence of vulnerable users at intersections, such as cyclists and motorcyclists, and, thanks to the collaboration with the Barcelona Fire Brigade, informs drivers of the presence of emergency vehicles approaching their area, allowing them to give way earlier.

These services proposed by the Barcelona deployment site aim to reduce pollution and congestion, increase safety on the road network and contribute to the sustainability of transport, while also addressing the particularities of complex urban areas and protecting vulnerable users such as cyclists.

C-MobILE Barcelona is a free Android application that is compatible with any navigation app, such as Google Maps or Waze, so that its warnings are superimposed on the navigation app being used. It is configurable for all types of users. This way, drivers, motorcyclists and cyclists are notified in real time of everything that is happening around them and is relevant to them on their day-to-day journeys, while using their favourite navigation app. Likewise, when users travel to other European project cities, the C-MobILE Barcelona app integrates with the local warning system to keep them informed of incidents occurring around them.

In addition to Barcelona, the C-MobILE project is developing at the same time and in a coordinated manner in the following European cities: Bilbao, Bordeaux, Copenhagen, Eindhoven, Helmond, Newcastle, Thessaloniki and Vigo. Their aim is to implement and deploy C-ITS (Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems) services based on communication between vehicles and road infrastructure to achieve safer and more efficient mobility.

This innovation project is co-financed by the European Union through the Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.
