How Applus+ used Cobalt-60 equipment to deliver an efficient solution

10/09/2018
Over the past 8 months, Applus+ has been working on a challenging project for one of Australia’s most prominent Oil & Gas giants.
The client had highlighted that in order for their operations to continue safely and efficiently, they would need to install additional components into their process systems. Unfortunately, this presented an issue as the subsequent introduction of internal interfaces would mean that the monitoring systems (UT & PAUT) already in use would be rendered ineffective.

Applus+ was entrusted with the task of developing a solution that would be robust and mobile to cater for the challenging environment in which the equipment had to operate. After exploring radiographic options, Applus+ selected Cobalt-60 (Co60) equipment to deliver a solution. Co60 is a synthetic radioactive isotope which, according to Australian standards, has the potential to inspect steel up to 200mm in total penetrated thickness. Due to its design, the use of Co60 equipment would enable inspections to be performed with extremely good reliability in terms of data and operation.

In conjunction with the client, technical trials were performed to ensure that the detection of anomalies would be possible. With the use of Computerised Radiography equipment, Applus+ developed a procedure for conducting reliable and repeatable inspections using direct measurement and absorption coefficient comparison techniques.

After extensive planning and trials, the equipment was deployed without fault allowing Applus+ to immediately begin delivering high quality data to the client. Both the client and Applus+ were pleased with the successful outcome and the immediate increase in scope potential for the new Co60 equipment.
