New Applus+ solution for carburisation measurements allows non-destructive inspection of radiant coils

Applus+ Energy & Industry, in cooperation with Texplore, has developed an innovative new solution for taking carburisation measurements: the CiBot Carburization Measurements, which allows the non-destructive inspection of radiant coils in furnaces.
Carburisation is the formation of metal carbides in a material as a result of exposure to a carbon-containing atmosphere. In service, it can result in the loss of mechanical properties over time in addition to wastage of the material. Carburising environments are commonly found in process piping and furnace tubes that contain an excess of carbon-containing species such as hydrocarbon gases or carbon monoxide.
In this environment, the Applus+-designed CiBot carburisation inspection robot allows non-destructive inspection to be carried out on radiant coils in a furnace. The visual results provide information about coil condition and enable the causes of any abnormality to be investigated, thereby solving the problem in a less intrusive and more effective way.
The process begins by defining the work scope: the number of pipes per furnace, the material being used, furnace diameter, pitch and other relevant design data.
The next step is to measure. Depending on the number of measurements required, two to four sensors can be used. After the measurements have been taken, the resulting data is analysed and a report generated. Finally, the limit state is analysed and remaining life calculated.
In brief, the advantages of CiBot Carburization Measurements include 14 times higher resolution, an inspection that is 7 times faster, zero scaffolding requirements, an optimised ethylene cracking furnace coil lifetime and reduced inspection costs.
