Applus+ successfully completes drone-use evaluation project for Costa Rican Institute of Electricity (ICE)

Applus+ was keen to be involved in the process of evaluating the use of drones in the inspection of Latin American power lines. At the request of the Inter-American Development Bank, the company took on the Drone Consultancy: Areas, Activities and Corporate Plan Review project for ICE, the Costa Rican Institute of Electricity.

This two-and-a-half-month consultancy project entailed an assessment of drone-use opportunities for the ICE Group’s various electricity and telecommunications businesses. It focused on defining the most appropriate drones and equipment for use in each of the ICE business areas – looking in particular at drone type, autonomy and suggested frequency of use.

Through this project, the Energy & Industry Division has identified the key benefits and limitations of drone use and analysed the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats linked to the use of drones in infrastructure inspection, monitoring and data collection.

In addition, and thanks to its extensive experience in this field, Applus+ provided training and awareness-raising sessions to ICE personnel on drone use. This included making field visits to all of the relevant ICE units and drawing up a corporate strategic plan containing recommendations for the drone service centre, an estimated budget and a comprehensive roll-out plan tailored to the needs of the organisation.

The Energy & Industry Division continues, in this way, to reinforce its status as a global leader in inspection, monitoring and project management. It also consolidates its position in the field of innovation by partnering with such important organisations as the Inter-American Development Bank and the Costa Rican Institute of Electricity.
