Applus+ delivers efficient solution for FMG Cloudbreak mine project using PAUT

In December 2023, CIVMEC, contracted by FMG, undertook the fabrication, construction, and installation of a fully welded steel water tank at FMG's Cloudbreak iron ore mine in Western Australia's Pilbara region. Applus+ played a pivotal role in this project by providing two Advanced NDT Technicians to conduct PAUT of the tank's welded horizontal and vertical joints, in compliance with API 650 standards.

The decision to use PAUT over traditional radiographic testing (RT) stemmed from logistical concerns associated with assembling radiography equipment at the remote site, and the need to avoid downtime for the CIVMEC workforce due to exclusion zones required for Radiographic Testing.

The project's highlights include:

• No project downtime: Utilizing PAUT ensured there was no project downtime, allowing CIVMEC to maintain operational efficiency throughout the inspection process.
• Faster inspection: PAUT facilitated faster inspection compared to traditional RT methods, enabling timely completion of the project.
• Near instantaneous results: PAUT provided near-instantaneous results, allowing for immediate assessment and decision-making.
• Improved data quality: The use of PAUT enhanced data quality, ensuring accurate evaluation of weld integrity and structural soundness.
• Risk reduction: Substituting radiography with PAUT mitigated risks associated with radiation exposure and logistical challenges, thereby enhancing safety and operational efficiency.

The project was completed in just four days and showcased Applus+'s commitment to delivering efficient and effective solutions while minimizing disruption to the client's operations.
