Applus+ UAE Completes 31 Day Sewer Flow Monitoring Campaign

02/04/2026

Applus+ in the UAE's Water Infrastructure department has successfully completed a 31‑day flow‑monitoring campaign across two sewer networks, supporting hydraulic assessment, network performance evaluation, and future planning.

The project utilised non-intrusive, radar-based technology to continuously log water levels and velocities at five‑minute intervals—without the need for confined space entry. Twelve monitoring points were strategically selected to capture upstream and downstream hydraulic behaviour, ensuring representative flow patterns and a reliable baseline for hydraulic modelling.

All installation and maintenance activities were carried out during off‑peak hours under an authority-approved traffic management plan. Each monitoring point was equipped with a dedicated mounting system, with sensors positioned at controlled elevations to optimise measurement accuracy.

Radar sensors measured surface velocity using the Doppler principle and combined it with logged water levels and verified pipe geometry to calculate flow rates and daily volumes. Field checks, including tare level verification, sediment depth measurements, and confirmation of pipe diameters, ensured high data integrity. Interim data reviews were performed throughout the monitoring period to validate sensor performance and detect anomalies early.

The campaign achieved full data continuity across all twelve locations, resulting in a validated dataset consistent with the as‑built network configuration. These results now serve as a reliable input for hydraulic modelling, capacity assessments, surcharge evaluations, and future operational planning.

Despite challenges such as equipment lead times and statutory approvals, the project was delivered through proactive planning, close coordination with authorities, and phased mobilisation. Notably, no confined space entry was required at any stage.

Head of Department Mark Loughman commented: “This project demonstrates how our Water Infrastructure Department can adapt to new challenges and highlights our commitment to supporting water authorities and governments across the UAE. The project was completed on time and within budget another great success story. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my team for their hard work and dedication throughout the project, as well as our partners for their continued support.”

This project demonstrates Applus+’ capability in delivering safe, non-intrusive monitoring solutions for live foul sewer networks, using robust technology, controlled methodologies, and structured data validation processes. The approach is scalable for wider network monitoring programmes and long‑term performance studies.
