Applus+ in the UAE has recently concluded a comprehensive leak detection campaign across multiple potable and firefighting water networks, reinforcing efforts to reduce water loss and enhance infrastructure performance. The project, driven by a need to address persistent water losses undetected through previous manual inspections, utilized advanced acoustic technology combined with digital monitoring tools.
In response to ongoing water losses in critical sections of the network, the Applus+ team deployed 42 compact, non-invasive acoustic logger sets across a targeted inspection area. These sensors enabled real-time data collection and analysis without interrupting water services or requiring invasive procedures.
The campaign successfully identified 12 confirmed leaks, using automated data correlation and a cloud-based dashboard for precise localization. This digital integration allowed for remote monitoring, reduced site visits, and rapid deployment of field teams, who were able to verify leak sites and facilitate timely repairs. By streamlining the process, the project significantly reduced operational costs and improved network response efficiency.
The proactive approach aligns with regional sustainability objectives by reducing non-revenue water (NRW)—an essential goal for urban water utilities. Initial estimates indicate that the recovered water represents a substantial daily volume, underscoring the value of continuous, tech-driven monitoring.
Mark Loughman Head of Department for Water Infrastructure Department at Applus+ commented:
“This campaign marks the beginning of a new strategic direction, supporting the water authority’s mission to reduce water loss through smart, minimally disruptive technologies.”
Building on this success, Applus+ remains committed to helping utilities and asset operators in the UAE adopt innovative solutions to optimize water network performance and sustainability.
