07/03/2016

The Alabama facility specializes in automated inspections of composite airframes

Airbus has qualified Applus+ Laboratories facility in Alabama (Arcadia Aerospace LLC.) as an approved supplier for non-destructive inspections (NDI). The scope of the accreditations covers ultrasonic inspection of A380 and A350 composite parts.

Applus+ Laboratories in Alabama, which is also NADCAP and AS9100 accredited, works with a variety of military and commercial airframe manufacturers, providing a high quality and self-managed alternative to in-house NDI of composite critical structures.

The Alabama facility uses customized automated technology (Contour Following Gantries, Immersion Tanks and Turn Tables) to inspect composite components with size ranges from small internal details to very large components such as wing skins, tips and boxes; engine cowlings and nacelles; fuselage skins and panels, rotor blades, etc.

Thanks to this new approval, Applus+ will be able to provide NDT inspection services to Airbus and its suppliers in the USA. Airbus recently opened its first USA-based manufacturing facility less than 3 hours away in Mobile, Alabama.
