Applus+ has been awarded multiple non-destructive testing (NDT) contracts by a global engineering, design and construction support services firm in the Energy and Industrial sectors. The scope of work entails the NDT of cokers, which are oil refinery processing units that convert residual oil from the vacuum distillation column into other substances, as part of the facilities’ turnaround activities.
Applus+ technicians will inspect the cokers using a variety of conventional and advanced inspection techniques, including Liquid Penetrant Inspection (LPT), Gamma Radiography, and Phased Array Ultrasonics (PAUT). LPT is one of the most widely used non-destructive testing methods and is an effective means of locating and determining the severity of surface discontinuities in materials, including those that are not visible to the naked eye. Our technicians perform LPT to identify surface cracks. Our technicians will also perform Radiographic testing (RT) , one of the most fundamental volumetric testing methods performed in the industry. In this case, gamma radiation is used to detect flaws on any weld repairs and detect potential damage. Additionally, PAUT is a fast and reliable ultrasonic testing (UT) inspection solution for flaw detection and characterization across multiple presentations simultaneously, resulting in significant cost savings while providing recordable results for further analysis and future inspections. Applus+’ NDT of the cokers helps to safeguard our clients’ operations by ensuring repairs are completed as per code and any flaws are detected during inspection.
