Applus+ in Saudi Arabia delivered comprehensive geotechnical investigation services for a major multi-use park development north of Riyadh, supporting the planning and design of a wide range of infrastructure across a 4.3 million m² site. The scope formed part of a large-scale urban development initiative requiring reliable subsurface data to enable safe and sustainable design of public realm assets, including lakes, bridges, and supporting service facilities.
The scale and diversity of the project required a structured and high-coverage investigation strategy. Applus+ executed 160 boreholes reaching depths of up to 20 meters, complemented by 250 test pits distributed across the site. This approach ensured consistent geotechnical coverage and allowed detailed characterization of varying soil strata across different zones of the development.
The collected geotechnical data provided essential input for the design of multiple structural elements, each with distinct loading conditions and performance requirements. By establishing accurate, location-specific ground models, the investigation supported informed engineering decisions and reduced uncertainty during the early design stages.
The primary challenge of the project was the extensive site area, which required coordinating field activities across multiple work fronts. In addition, variability in subsurface conditions introduced further complexity in ensuring uniform data quality and interpretation across the development footprint.
To address these challenges, Applus+ deployed three specialized field teams operating in parallel, enabling efficient coverage of the entire site. This coordinated execution model supported consistent data acquisition and helped maintain control over schedule and quality requirements. The full investigation program was completed within four months.
The successful delivery of this project demonstrates Applus+’s capability to manage large-scale geotechnical investigations for complex land development schemes. By providing comprehensive and reliable subsurface information across a vast and variable site, Applus+ supported safe, efficient, and well-informed design outcomes for a major public infrastructure development in Saudi Arabia.
