Applus+ successfully performs automated ultrasonic testing of amine regeneration stacks using rope access


    Applus+ in Canada, has recently completed a project to evaluate the integrity of two amine regeneration stacks in Western Alberta, Canada.

    The project consisted of automated ultrasonic testing of the stack body. Applus+ was contacted by the operator of the facility who required assistance with inspections that could be mobilized immediately and was seeking a solution that would not employ scaffolding. 

    The Applus+ team immediately analyzed the scope of work and devised a plan. The following morning all equipment was prepared including a special lanyard to support the AUT system that would assist in guiding the instrument. The team, which consisted of four technicians, mobilized and arrived at the client site later that evening. 

    The following morning, the equipment was calibrated and ready for use. The rope access system was setup and all safety checks completed.  Inspections were performed at maximum height of 55 feet around the circumference of the stack. The inspections were completed in two working days and within one weak of the client’s initial request. 

    Rope access enabled NDT proved to be invaluable in this situation where a traditional access was not viable. It also provides our clients with an excellent alternative to traditional access solutions as it is a cost-efficient alternative to cumbersome scaffolding.
