Every year, facilities such as pulp mills shut down operations to execute testing and inspection-related assignments. Planned shutdowns, or turnarounds, are required by regulatory bodies to ensure asset owners and operators are operating according to adopted standards and codes.
Applus+ was recently awarded a large-scale shutdown project to execute inspection assignments at a manufacturing facility in British Columbia. The scope includes non-destructive testing (NDT) on various facility assets including a digester, recovery boiler, and various tanks and piping systems.
Applus+ offered the client a full range of required NDT services, incorporating methods such as Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) and Computer Radiography to monitor and assess Stress Assisted Corrosion (SAC).
Applus+ technicians are currently utilizing several NDT methods to execute the required examinations of the facility's various assets. The procedures that Applus+ technicians have applied incorporate Liquid Penetrant and Magnetic Particle Examination, two of the most common surface NDT techniques used to detect and determine the extent of surface-breaking flaws.
In addition to these methods, conventional and advanced ultrasonic techniques are currently being performed to assess and aid in monitoring corrosion levels of various assets, including piping. Applus+ is also executing this project with extensive utilization of Computed Radiography, reducing time per task and providing fully digital data.
Assignments of this magnitude can be fast-paced and demanding, requiring the expertise and experience of qualified personnel to execute large-scale turnarounds.
Because of the quality and timeliness of the work delivered by our dedicated team of technicians and engineers, Applus+ was selected as the service provider of choice for a second year in a row to complete turnaround assignments.
