Applus+ UK received a client request to deliver a solution which includes performing radiography testing, with the least disruption for operations. As this, a no-go with traditional radiography. Applus+ addresses this challenge with the SCAR method. Together with HTSL, Applus+ demonstrated the SCAR method at a client facility in Clevedon (new Construction project).
Why SCAR?
The SCAR (Small Controlled Area Radiography) systems are developed with safety as the main objective, they enable radiography to be carried out with radiation levels ALARP (As Low As Reasonably Practicable). The SCAR is a close proximity radiographic system that will provide a safer and a more manageable working environment due to the highly collimated nature of the containers. The SCAR systems can obtain up to 98% reduction in exclusion zones compared to conventional ‘open site’ radiography techniques. Meaning, radiography can be carried out inside a controlled area erected in the centre of a workplace, with minimal disruption to normal operations.
The SCAR family has quite simply set a precedent for safer working in the industry that others aspire to follow.
