Applus+ in Saudi Arabia successfully delivered offshore geotechnical investigation services at Al-Arbaeen Lake in Jeddah’s Historical District in 2023. The project supported future waterfront and infrastructure development by providing reliable marine subsurface data through offshore drilling and site investigation works conducted within a sensitive urban marine environment.
The works included drilling 23 offshore boreholes, each reaching depths of up to 40 meters, using marine drilling techniques suitable for shallow water conditions. Operations were carried out with a truck-mounted Mobile B-53 drilling rig supported by a jack-up barge, ensuring safe and stable drilling across water depths ranging from 2 to 10 meters. Soil sampling, in-situ testing, and laboratory analysis were conducted to characterise the subsurface conditions, including soil stratigraphy, bearing capacity, and settlement potential, providing essential data for foundation design and earthworks planning for the waterfront development.
Executing marine geotechnical works within an active urban environment presented several challenges, including restricted site access, variable water depths, environmental sensitivity, and the need to complete all works within a single mobilization. Applus+ managed these challenges through detailed pre-planning, optimized drilling sequences, and close coordination with stakeholders, ensuring safe and uninterrupted operations while minimizing impact on the surrounding area.
By completing the offshore investigation efficiently and safely, Applus+ provided high-quality geotechnical data to inform design and construction decisions for the Al-Arbaeen Lake development.
