Shuaiba Oil Pier Rehabilitation and Fender Replacement Project

19/01/2020

Applus + Velosi in Kuwait was awarded a Third Party Inspection (TPI) contract for the Shuaiba Oil Pier Rehabilitation and Fender Replacement Project.

The pier was constructed using steel in 1955, and due to environmental corrosion, it deteriorated significantly and was in need of restoration in order to support the Kuwait National Petroleum Company’s (KNPC) plans to export product from their newly built clean fuel project (CFP).

This is one of the first marine projects where KNPC’s contract required TPI. Applus+ Velosi completed the project to the client’s satisfaction gaining their trust throughout the project. We alerted the client in our inspection report that the extent of the structural damage far greater than initially anticipated. KNPC management decided that under the original scope of work the structure would not survive the expected life-extension period, and adjusted the scope of work accordingly.

This was a special project because the client requested a single person to acquire knowledge of concrete repairs, welding, coating, underwater coating, Cathodic Protection and inspection in a marine environment. The inspector was involved in underwater inspections, where inspecting the underwater-coating was a challenge due to rough seas. Our inspector trained for the required skills through a professional diving certification (SCUBA) agency.

Once this project is completed, the oil pier will survive another 20 years. Applus+ Velosi in Kuwait has now established local precedence in performing TPI for complicated marine projects.
