Applus+ in Qatar is supporting the construction of a 200-metre flare tower by developing and delivering an integrated rope access solution that enables essential assembly and erection activities to be carried out safely and efficiently at height. As the structure is built in multiple sections, Applus+ has implemented an adaptable access methodology designed to support changing construction requirements while reducing reliance on conventional temporary access systems.
The scale of the project presents significant work-at-height challenges. As new tower sections are lifted, positioned and connected, construction teams require reliable access to elevated structural interfaces without disrupting lifting operations or the wider construction programme. In response, Applus+ developed a rope access strategy around the tower’s erection sequence, allowing access arrangements to evolve as construction progresses.
An experienced Applus+ Rope Access team works alongside lifting and structural personnel, providing specialist access directly at the required work fronts. Detailed work-at-height planning, technical supervision and rescue preparedness are incorporated into the methodology to support the safe execution of activities at elevation.
The scope includes accessing structural connection points, supporting the alignment and positioning of tower sections, assisting with bolt installation and structural connections, and providing specialist work positioning during assembly. The team also supports controlled tightening and torquing operations, as well as final connection and release activities associated with lifting works.
Integrating rope access into the erection methodology gives technicians rapid access to changing work areas while reducing reliance on scaffolding at extreme elevations. This limits temporary access requirements and allows work to progress alongside complex lifting and installation activities without introducing additional access structures.
Through this project, Applus+ applies specialist rope access engineering and technical expertise to address the challenges of working at height during large-scale industrial construction, providing an access solution designed around the changing requirements of the tower erection process.
