Applus+ in Indonesia was engaged to carry out the periodic inspection and recertification of a 2,500 m³ butadiene spherical storage tank at a chemical manufacturing facility in Merak, Banten. The project was undertaken to verify the integrity of the pressure vessel, ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements and international standards, and support the safe operation of a critical asset used in the storage of a highly volatile chemical.
The inspection was performed in accordance with ASME Section VIII, API 510, and Indonesian regulatory requirements, with Applus+ deploying a multidisciplinary team to assess the condition of the vessel and confirm its suitability for continued service. The scope of work included structural integrity assessments, pressure safety system verification, and a comprehensive programme of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT).
A range of advanced inspection techniques were applied, including Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), and detailed visual inspections of the vessel and its associated components. Pressure safety devices were also examined and verified in accordance with relevant industry standards. These activities enabled a thorough evaluation of the tank's condition while minimizing operational disruption.
To support the recertification process, Applus+ applied industry-recognized assessment methodologies to evaluate the asset's ongoing suitability for operation. By combining inspection data with asset integrity expertise, the team provided the asset owner with the technical assurance required to support future maintenance planning and long-term asset management objectives.
The successful completion of the project resulted in the recertification of the butadiene storage tank for continued operation, providing independent verification that the asset meets applicable safety, integrity, and regulatory requirements. The assessment also provided valuable information to support lifecycle management and operational decision-making for this critical piece of infrastructure.
This project demonstrates Applus+’s expertise in pressure vessel inspection and asset integrity management for the chemical and petrochemical sector, helping clients maintain safe and reliable operations, meet regulatory obligations, and maximize the long-term performance of critical assets.
