Flugzeitdiffraktion (TOFD) wird meist mit „Phased-Array“-Anwendungen als schnelles Screening-Werkzeug zur Erkennung und Dimensionierung von Umfangs- und Axialschweißfehlern eingesetzt.
Beim TOFD-Setup werden zwei Wandler auf gegenüberliegenden Seiten des zu prüfenden Bereichs platziert. Die Schallwellen werden dann in einem der Bauteildicke entsprechenden Winkel in die Probe gebrochen.
