Applus+ performs asset integrity using drones on an ammonia stripper tower

Applus+ in Canada was contracted to inspect their client's 40-foot-high, 36-inch-diameter ammonia stripper tower internally and externally on a five-year service contract.

This inspection examined the stripper tower's containment boundaries and attachments inside and externally. A secondary goal was to improve asset integrity management efficiency and reduce risks associated with conventional inspection procedures. Applus+ presented innovative inspection solutions using drones, advanced data capture, and tailored reporting via e-delivery to meet these goals.

Applus+ used cutting-edge UAVs with high-resolution cameras, LiDAR sensors, and thermal imaging to inspect assets. These drones captured precise photos and data in a quarter of the time needed to evaluate key ammonia stripper tower internals.

Remote inspection of confined spaces and hard-to-reach locations reduces human exposure to hazardous settings and the need for a safety team. Data from these inspections was processed using advanced analytics tools to discover faults, corrosion, and structural weaknesses, and unique reports were developed.

Using UAV inspection helped the customer improve asset integrity and reduce risks and expenses.
