Applus+ in Papua New Guinea completed a tank settlement and profile survey for an oil & gas company

04/04/2023

Our team carried out a tank settlement and profile survey for an oil and gas company in Papua New Guinea. It is an inspection technique used to assess the structural integrity of tanks. This method determines if any settlement or deformation has occurred over time. Settlement can occur due to various factors, such as the weight of the tank contents, changes in soil conditions, and temperature variations. Settlement and deformation can lead to damage to the tank structure, as well as to the piping and equipment attached to the tank. The project involved conducting an in-service tank shell edge and foundation settlement survey for several tanks across various facilities.

The tank was first inspected by the only national API653-certified tank inspector in PNG for any visible indications of damage or corrosion that may impact the tank's life expectancy. The team then conducted 3D Laser Scanning for tank profile assessment for roundness and verticality, along with an In-Service Tank Shell Edge Settlement survey according to the scope of work.
We completed the project within a month, working across all work sites in Papua New Guinea utilizing local, Malaysian and Melbourne tank engineering team resources. Our experts compared the survey measurements for each tank examined to the original tank design specifications. In this manner, we were able to determine the extent of any settlement or deformation to assist our client with future tank maintenance planning.

Some challenges that may arise during a tank settlement and profile survey include access to the tank, obtaining accurate measurements, and identifying the causes of any deformation or settlement detected. Using specialized surveying equipment, such as laser scanners, and thoroughly inspecting the tank and its surroundings can help solve these challenges.

Applus+ provides tank settlement and profile survey services to ensure the structural integrity of tanks in various industries. Our experienced team offers valuable insights to help clients plan maintenance activities more efficiently. We are committed to delivering high-quality services globally and providing innovative solutions to support industry growth and development.
