Applus+ in Australia performed a Failure Analysis of Pipe Hanger Bolt

02/02/2023

At Applus+, we provide diagnostic and forensic engineering analysis of materials failures for all types of materials. In Australia, our team was commissioned to investigate the failure of a 316 stainless steel bolt used in a hanging pipe support.

Through use of a metallurgical microscope, crevice corrosion was identified under the bolt head. Further investigation through Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) with Applus+’ Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) confirmed the presence of chloride induced stress corrosion cracking. This resulted in complete failure through the bolt head.

Failure analysis of pipe hanger bolts is the process of determining the cause of a failure in a pipe hanger bolt system. Pipe hanger bolts are used to support pipes in a variety of industrial applications, and their failure can result in serious damage or injury.

There are several common causes of failure in pipe hanger bolts, "One of the most common is corrosion, which ca occur due to exposure to moisture or chemical," said Graeme Brown, title, Applus+ in Australia. In addition, "overloading and fatigue failure are another common cause."

In order to prevent failure in pipe hanger bolts, it is important to select the right type of bolt for the application, to properly install and maintain the bolts, and to regularly inspect them for signs of wear or damage. By conducting the failure analysis of pipe hanger bolts, we can determine the cause of the failure and make recommendations for preventing future failures.
