From NDT assistant to project manager – growth knows no boundaries in Applus+

04/07/2018

At Applus+, we recognize that nurturing a culture of diversity in our business is more than policy statements and written goals. It requires continuous effort, focus and action to build awareness of the value that diversity brings to our team, our customers, and our industry as a whole. Our Spotlight on Diversity is designed to share the stories and experiences to highlight how workplace diversity makes a positive impact.

Marie knows no boundaries at Applus+ and tells us how she went from NDT assistant to Project Manager for Applus+ operations at Chevron’s San Joaquin Valley facility in Bakersfield, California.

Tell us about yourself and how you came to work for Applus+?

I have now worked for Applus+ since 2008. If you would have told me what I would be doing in 10 years back, I would have laughed. I came into this line of work looking for somewhere I could be a little more myself and not be confined to an office work space.  I had found my freedom and have never looked back!  I found it appealing to follow in my father’s footsteps and work in the Oilfields.  It is gratifying to me to be a non-traditional gender in a very traditional role.  I enjoy the technical aspects of our work and the ability to make it my own.  I have found that my approach, although different, seems like a much needed break from a very technical and traditional role.  I enjoy the openness I bring to the workplace and I believe my industry peers do too.

What do you like about your role and working at Applus+?

Working for Applus+ over the years has challenged me time and again, and I love it. I have worn many hats working for Applus+ starting as an NDT Assistant and progressing as a UT Technician, Data Entry Specialist, API Inspector, QA Specialist and now a Project Manager. I have acquired skills over the years that have allowed me to build on my talents and gives me a well-rounded understanding of all aspects of what it takes to deliver quality work to our customers.  Now that I have become a Project Manager, I am grateful for all the hats that I have worn at Applus+.  Collectively, the skills I have acquired help me to understand a broad spectrum of possibilities. I understand and can relate to each step of our work processes.  It allows me to be more comfortable in my responsibilities and the decisions I take. I am happy for the opportunities I have been given and enjoy showing my gratitude by succeeding.

What are you most proud of?

I am proud of the person that I have become. I am proud of the group of people I work with at Applus+, we have all came so far over the years, and I am proud of the processes that we have built.

I feel that working at Applus+ I have not only had the opportunity to learn and grow, but to also beyond the standard in our industry.
