Novotec, a company of the Applus+ Group, participates in the design and construction of the first Passivhaus-certified industrial building in Spain

Since the beginning of 2019, Novotec, a company of the Applus+ Group, has been collaborating with Enel Green Power in Galicia, Castilla y León, Asturias and the Canary Islands through an engineering services contract to support projects and maintenance tasks.

This contract implies a demolition and renovation project of two of the industrial facilities located in the Leboreiro Wind Farm, in Lugo (Galicia), which, through a comprehensive reform, are in the process of becoming the first industrial-type infrastructure in Spain with Passivhaus certification.

The buildings, constructed according to Passivhaus standards, manage to reduce energy consumption by up to 75% thanks to five basic principles: thermal insulation, absence of thermal bridges, airtightness, passive house windows and mechanical heat recovery ventilation. The energy it requires can be obtained from renewable energies, making it an exceptionally low energy cost building that facilitates sustainability objectives.

The reform of the Leboreiro Wind Farm aims to expand the administrative space of the current facilities, by joining it with the building that until now housed the wind farm's warehouse, control room and cell room.

The aim is to achieve a self-sufficient, bioclimatic and sustainable building through the application of architectural and structural solutions that optimise the resources and materials used, reduce energy demand, promote the use of renewable energies and minimise waste and emissions. This new Passivhaus construction for Enel Green Power, in particular, will have photovoltaic panels and geothermal collection, which will allow it to be self-sufficient in energy terms for its underfloor heating, rainwater collection and mechanical ventilation installations inside the building.

To implement this project, a team from Novotec's Energy Efficiency department conducted an initial study of the works to analyse the possibilities offered by the site and Passivhaus construction at this wind farm. Once the initial analysis was completed, the relevant procedures were made with the corresponding official bodies, and an architectural firm certified as a Passivhaus Designer was subcontracted to carry out all the reforms required to obtain Passivhaus Certification from the Passive House Institute (PHI), the body accredited to grant these certifications.

Owing to our previous experience carrying out energy efficiency studies in several Enel wind farms and our mutual collaboration in other projects and sectors, we have become a trusted partner for this client, who values the extensive experience of our technical team and the quality and professionalism we show in our work.

The path towards sustainability must be a common objective in all fields of activity, including engineering; with this project, Applus+ reaffirms its commitment to this vision of the future.
